a healthy depression

Depression and Jesus Christ

What Exactly Is Depression:

There is a healthy depression but according to Wikipedia Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, tendencies, feelings, and sense of well-being.[1] A depressed mood is a normal temporary reaction to life events such as loss of a loved one. It is also a symptom of some physical diseases and a side effect of some drugs and medical treatments. Depressed mood is also a symptom of some mood disorders such as major depressive disorder or dysthymia.[2]Depression can be a powerfully negative thing in a person’s life. Depression can be debilitating, it can be caused by a medical condition . It can and has even resulted in death, I do not mean to minimize depression in any way with this post.

In fact I am hesitant to even use the word depression for what I am trying to get at with this post. This post is exclusively intendind for Christians. For those in whom Jesus Christ lives, there is something like a mild form of healthy depression that can be experienced.

A Healthy Depression

Depression or the feeling of chronic sadness or loss of hope is not necessarily always a bad thing. There are at least two causes for what I call Healthy Depression.

There is a time in a Christian’s life as he/she walks with the Lord that we are forced to chose which way we will go.

“But A NATURAL MAN/ WOMAN does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But HE/SHE WHO IS SPIRITUAL appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:14-15‬ ‭NASB‬

Christians constantly must chose whether or not we will follow Jesus Christ in many ways. Sometimes following him is a very difficult and painful thing (think of the rich young ruler who was told to sell all he had, then walked away sad).

Depending on our age or our understanding of Jesus we may chose poorly. We may side with our natural man/woman rather than our spiritual man/ woman. For some it can take years for God to gain ground in us enough to follow Jesus fully.

Our insight and understanding of the magnitude of Jesus Christ, who he is, who he has made us to be and what is coming has a lot to do with how devoted, how fixated, and how completely we are inclined to follow Jesus.

But when Jesus is alive in us and when we side with our natural fallen, sinful, distracted state. That choice can result in feelings similar to depression.

When we side with our natural self we live below the life of Jesus Christ. His life which is freely available to us, which knocks on the door of our heart.

When we do this we can grieve the Spirit of God within us and we then can feel that grief. We actually can feel HIS grief or sorrow.

It is this godly sorrow which turns us around to Jesus Christ. I am not talking about guilt. Guilt is ungodly and destructive.

When I’ve grieved the spirit or seen others do so there is a strong desire to make it right. To do what it takes to stop, turn around and please him. There is a restorative aspect that is undeniable, not so with guilt.

This depressed state as we neglect the Lord within is not something we should medicate. Instead it is something we desperately need to understand better. Failing to live by Jesus Christ can depress us, it can affect our emotions, it can make us, as we face our fallen state, sad.

Dying Daily Hurts

This feeling of depression is also not always associated with poor choices and sin. It can also be a reaction to the dying daily state of the Christian. Our lives are hidden in God in Jesus Christ, our natural man with his plans, and fleshly ambitions needs to go unsatisfied.

“He must increase and I must decrease” sometimes hurts. “Less of me” can result in feelings of loss.

I had many ambitions, dreams and hopes that I’ve had to let go of. I can’t tell you how much that hurt and sometimes still hurts, it has felt like a great loss which is difficult to describe.

This feeling of loss is what I call a healthy depression, it has a purpose. It is not a feeling of sorrow over abandonment or aloneness. Perhaps depression is even too strong of a word here but I think it may fit. Its a godly sorrow with a purpose and an affect. Another way of saying this its a reaction of our natural man to dying or not getting his way.

Sometimes I think we are too quick to assume feelings of sadness are unhealthy depression that need to be medicated with medicine, or food, or addictions. Or trying harder in our religious duties. When all we really need is a greater understanding of the work of Jesus Christ on our natural man in order that we might follow him more completely.

Two Reasons For Healthy Depression

Sometimes we are not medically depressed we are just feeling the same grief of the Holy Spirit who lives within us.

Allow yourself to be convicted and turn around and follow him again.

Other times our natural man is simply reacting to his loss of control and/or loss of getting his way, yielding to Jesus Christ.

I could find examples of both of these in scripture but I think you get my point.

In either case knowing the Lord more fully is the answer to this.

Allow yourself to feel this healthy “depression”, let it shape and guide you, to go FULLY with the Lord. Regardless of how much it hurts, he is worth it. He HIMSELF is our consolation, a prize far better than any prize that we could dream of.

Rethinking Death

Making Sense of Death

There have been many school shootings in the past 10 years. From kindergarteners to seniors and every grade in between it seems. It’s hard to imagine a more horrific thought, sending your child to school and they are gunned down. So sad, so infuriating. The ridiculousness and horror of these shootings has driven me to rethink death.

I pray for the families who have had to endure this and I pray for God’s protection of my family.

But that is not the point of this article.

What about the kids who were killed? Their lives snuffed out so early, death of children seems so unjust.

If all of humanity is lost and if God wants all people to become saved. And if people can’t be saved without hearing the gospel of Jesus then how can God be just and fair with these young victims of murder?

Does God make sure that every child heard the gospel and made a choice?

What about the kindergarteners? are they automatically in the kingdom of Jesus because they are so young?

To really tackle these questions well I think we have to rethink some things.

  • Rethink the State of Humanity
  • Rethink Death and Hell
  • and most importantly …Rethinking the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.

I’ve learned that when things don’t jive well with Jesus Christ and his revealed nature then we need to rethink them. We need to rethink what we think we know about reality or what we assume scripture teaches.

Think about it, if God thought like we do he has been living with billions of children who are terminally ill since the beginning. This is not the case. Is the death of a 5 year old now seen differently to God then the death of an 85 year old? and if not why?

The Death of Jesus … The Death of All

To accurately understand what happened at the death of Jesus we need expand our thinking.

When Jesus was tortured and killed at the young age of 33, by virtue of substitution we all died. This is true in the realty of God. It should become true in our reality.

So that 85 year old, that 5 year old and you who read this are considered dead, extinct, in the eyes of God. Remember how God told Adam and Eve in Genesis, “in the day that you eat of that fruit you will surely die.” Yet they ate and lived on physically for hundreds of years. Right there is a huge discrepancy in definitions.

God’s definition of our death is different from ours.

To us death means our bodies stop working and they rot. And we don’t get to talk to that person in that body EVER again, we just only have hope at that point. It’s somewhat terrifyingly sad and no one knows what its like.

But to God death is not this, he can resurrect a body as easily as he created them. Think Lazarus, think Jesus himself.

To accurately understand reality, the future in Jesus Christ and to have a healthy perspective about death and heaven. Gods definition of death need to become our definition of death.

The gospel of the kingdom of Jesus then becomes much different. Its not a decision point that determines our heaven or hell.

It’s an invitation of God into the earth which is already dead, essentially humanity was in hell already. He then ended us by substitution of himself, he then resurrected us by substitution and now only rejection of Jesus Christ will screw that up.

So those 5 year olds and the 85 year olds were already dead. They were also already resurrected into new life in Jesus Christ.

Had those 5 year olds knowingly rejected Jesus Christ? No of course not, at worst they may have been parroted their parents rejection of him, unlikely, rare and too young to know what they were saying. So they are fine and alive in Christ.

Did that 85 year old grandparent reject Jesus Christ? maybe? but I don’t know many who have really rejected him. Some of my grandparents never spoke of him, they never lived for him, they never said much of anything to indicate their belief of disbelief in him that I know of. But they attended a church so I’m hopeful they knew who Jesus was and never knowingly rejected him.

The Kingdom of Jesus Christ Is Here in Part and Its Coming In Fullness

My point is the coming kingdom of Jesus Christ, which will never stop increasing, is entered through belief in Jesus Christ. Knowing him as the way to life, not only to heaven but to life again, to the future itself, to an endless life that cannot be snuffed out.

There is a verse in Hebrews that says “It has been appointed for us once to die and then the judgment.”

We all experience death, we should look past it, not allow the circumstances around those death to torment us.  Death is not the end, there is a resurrection, there is a future. We also need to rethink the end because Jesus Christ himself is the End (see Colossians 1), and that is infinitely good news.

To accept or to reject Jesus Christ is not some religious decision point. It is the path to life, the path to the future. Finding life of Christ is not difficult or rare and it does not come through some complex sermon and altar call and commitment to a set of religious rules.

It comes from within, after the testimony of his people. The father himself reveals Jesus to hearts so their is no need to torment and to panic over “did this person hear the gospel before their death?” Did God just condemn 20 kindergarteners to hell because he allowed some insane 18 year old to enter a school to kill? NO he didn’t!

Those kids were already dead and resurrected. Those kids had not rejected Christ so they are just as fine as the 85 year old woman who loved Jesus her entire life.

Let Jesus Christ guide and help you to Rethink Absolutely Everything

suffering

Blessed and Suffering

This Blessed and Suffering post begins my Q3 daily postings, every week day I will attempt to post an article. I did this in Q1, Q2 was dedicated to publishing and launching by book From His Side. Now I will continue on with the daily postings. Posting daily is a lot of work but it was very rewarding.

Blessed and Suffering

Don’t mistake God’s blessing and abundance and provision in Jesus for the absence of suffering and death. They are both true.

The majority of the popular word of faith teachers (which are now more shallow and mainstream than ever) assumed that blessed and abundantly provided for surely must also mean freedom from suffering and dying daily. Kenneth Hagin was an exception to this but his teachings on this were not popularized or marketed like his others.

Not so.

Both blessed of God and suffering are true for us. Just like they are for Jesus Christ himself.

Jesus Christ is high and supreme king of the universe … who also suffers.

We live in s body and mind and spirit which must be put under and killed. But we also are seated high above in heavenly places with Jesus himself.

We are both dead men/women and fused with the God of the universe at the same moment.

Jesus Christ is the very fusion between heaven and earth in one man.

Wheat Jesus is so are we in the world. Death is a huge part of being a Christian. By it we conquer ourselves. Where death works in us the resurrection power of Jesus Christ restores. One of the biggest mistakes that I see is that people ignore the part of us that needs to die with the part of us that is seated with Jesus.

What is true of one (my identity in Christ the second Adam, the firstborn from the dead) should never be applied to the other (my identify in the flesh from Adam destined for death).
