The Real Go Getter

I read not too long ago the book The Go Getter by Peter B. Kyne. It is a very good productivity and leadership read for business people.

But, this book and its teachings should not be applied to discipleship or to living the Christian life or ministry.

Motivational business speakers have said:

There are three types of people in the world:

  1. those that make things happen (the go-getter)
  2. those that watch things happen (masses of followers stuck in the rat race)
  3. those who wonder ‘what’s happening’, (those confused enough to follow around the go getter and feel confused about why they too aren’t the go-getter)”

Never think this list is for the Christian or to Christian ministry. The extent that it is applied is the extent that it has ceases to be a work of God. We just cannot serve God or live out an inspired life for Christ.

Regarding the ministry and the gospel it is a mistake to strive to be one who aggressively makes things happen. I am convinced it is the mistake of a lifetime for those who love and want to serve God.

Jesus Christ himself did not live like this, neither should we. Jesus lived in the opposite of this so should we!

Jesus Christ is The Go Getter…the real one.

The way of life for the Christian is almost in exact reverse order of the businessman list. I attempt to write this list in the same format below:

  1. He wonders what is Jesus doing and only what Jesus is doing. (He is not easily distracted by tradition or by self-help or by vain repetition, falsely called ministry.)
  2. She watches to see and to hear what Jesus is doing around her. She grows to gradually see the difference between man’s religious works and the real thing.
  3. He only does and cooperates and flows with what Jesus is doing, no other work impresses him or sways him. He is not a go getter, he only does, says what he sees the real go-getter of the ages do or say.

Notice the reverse order of the businessman list: (doer, watcher, wonderer) vs. (wonderer, watcher, doer).

It is our job to be diligently obsessed with wondering and watching then doing what he is doing.

If you want be aggressive and hardworking and zealous for Jesus, then live by this second list,…not the first.

Theory OF Everything

The Provision of Jesus Christ

Having Our Needs Met

It is possible to have a massive income yet our needs are not met. Money only goes so far in life, it is quite inadequate. It makes many things in life easier but it is not real provision. Money is only one of Gods many tools of provision. The provision of Jesus Christ is what we really crave. In fact Jesus Christ himself is the real provision of life.

Successfully going after and obtaining money is not the same as being provided for by God. The money you may gain by your hard work or hard selling is its own reward, and it can be deeply unsatisfying. Ease and pleasure relieve the difficulties, stress, and pains of life yet when they are gone we VERY quickly realize that something deeper is unsatisfied.

What we all really crave is the provision of God, and provision is absolutely bound up in and within Jesus Christ. Real provision originates from him and it flows from him and only from him. Money flows independent from him but provision does not. The provision of Jesus Christ often includes money yet its a small part of it. To make money the entirety of provision is to deeply misunderstand Jesus Christ.

Constant overspending and borrowing is an indication that we have hearts aimed at money. Money is provision to this person, and so there is never enough, the hope that more satisfies the heart and removes our troubles keeps us in pursuit of more. This often makes a person greedy (whether they have a lot of money or a little.)

Workaholism and business greed shows the same thing.

Instead be okay with going without and being in lack of money. It is ok, even give away what little you have. Let Jesus provide for you when, where, and how he decides. Settle it in your heart that Jesus himself is your provision.

It’s true that Jesus “gives us power to gain wealth” but we can also gain wealth in our own power by simply bowing down to the money system around us. Worshiping it and making it a thing we chase after and seek first.

The money system requires our attention, our focus and our minds (all of it). Chasing after money and things like food, clothing, and prestige can enslave us for life.

The Provision of Jesus Christ

Wealthy people are not necessarily blessed people. Poor people are not necessarily cursed people.

In Matthew chapter 6 Jesus clearly taught that the gentiles seek after provision and the things that money can buy. As they go about their day they are in hot pursuit of provision. His people however were to seek first him personally, his kingdom coming here to earth. Then God would be their provision.

Do not worry then, saying “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” of “What will we ear for clothing?” 32 For the gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things, 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Jesus Christ

Not By Might

Not By Ability, Strength & Wealth

Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,‘ says the LORD of hosts.” – Zechariah 4:6

‘Might’ here means human strength, wealth, and ability.

Sometimes it’s hard to determine if a work is being empowered and supported by God. We often look for “fruit” which few agree on what fruit means as some sort of sign that God is in a thing or not.

I’ve seen many Christians have serious reservations about a ministry only to be disarmed and silenced by what they think is spiritual fruit.

A great way of evaluating a thing is not only looking for signs of fruit. But by looking at what sort of fuel a work needs.

  • Does it need a massive flow of human might and greatness?
  • Does it need a large flow of money?

The extent that a thing is from Jesus it will not need human strength, ability, and wealth. He just does not build with those things. He never did and never will.

If a work requires a powerful man/woman to happen and a lot of money, then it is a work of man. Not Jesus. As good and religious as it may seem… don’t bother with it.

Jesus may be able to work in a little here and there but he does that in spite of man. There is also a lot of fake fruit out there that causes confusion. Every religion claims “fruit” from heaven as some sort of evidence that God is on their side.

Don’t look for fruit, real fruit will be obvious and consistent with the life of Jesus if it’s real.

Instead just look for Jesus with great intensity and consistency. If we will do this He will build with us. He will produce real and lasting fruit as we seek him… preferably together.
