Impure and Blind
Impurity causes spiritual blindness. Purification happens through seeking Jesus Christ and obedience to what we spiritually see and hear.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”- Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:8
Don’t overlook that link that Jesus emphasized between purity and seeing God!!
Could the opposite of this beatitude be?
“Cursed are the impure, for they will not see God”
If our eyes and tongues are impure we simply cannot see God and be led by him. We become blinded in a spiritual way.
Pursuit of and participation with sin affects us in a spiritual way. It corrupts us both physically and spiritually.
Living the Christian life is not about performance and perfection. It’s about our pursuit of Jesus Christ and participation with his life. It’s about being able to follow God. Being able to see him and hear him in a spiritual way.
He doesn’t get mad at us and demand an apology when we cooperate with impurity. But when we become impure it is we who actually become blind.
Purifying Ourselves
Pursuit of and participation with Jesus Christ purifies us both physically and spiritually.
It’s one thing to read that and understand it mentally it’s entirely another thing to experience it.
I hate being spiritually blind, it’s like I’ve wandered off in the woods and the sun went down. I cant do much of anything, tripping over my own feet, walking where I wouldn’t walk if I could see clearly.
But then again seeking Jesus Christ is like walking back home out of darkness, the porch light is on. My wife and kids are waiting with hugs and ice cream.
We purify ourselves with obedience to him when we can see and hear him clearly.
1 Peter 1:22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls…
