Deny Self ? Deny Jesus?

“If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and FOLLOW ME”

Mark 8:34 ESV

“And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.””

Mark 14:30 ESV

In our lives someone WILL BE and MUST BE denied EVERY SINGLE day. Self or Jesus Christ.

We cannot follow Jesus and put self #1.

To put Jesus #1 and follow him is to put self (with his/her desire for pride of life and status and pleasure and ease and honor and money) in his proper place …daily…repeatedly.

It’s Ok To Be Hungry

It’s ok to be hungry and dissatisfied, not only is it ok…it’s actually good for us. Delay the need for gratification, postpone getting what you want, indefinitely if necessary. Even when it angers you and begins to feel like suffering.

Jesus designed many consolations and good things to kick in after the hunger and appetites are denied, and placed in subject to him.

It’s also ok to be in pain (mentally or physically), don’t flee it, it’s a message that something needs repair, go after the root cause, don’t “medicate” pain with pursuit of ease or pleasure or with idle, nervous, laziness.

IF you’re going to suffer…

IF YOU’RE GOING TO SUFFER you might as well:

  • Suffer for godly reasons, not for nonsense brought on or made worse by bad behavior.
  • Stop whining and trying to escape it.
  • Stop trying to medicate it with comfort, ease and pleasure.
  • Take comfort from the immeasurable suffering of Jesus Christ. He alone can relate, take his hand and suffer with him.
