Giving In Secret

When you give to the needy, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing. – Jesus Christ

How secretive is this. One hand avoiding the notice of the other hand.

How contrary this is to worldly ways of giving. The worldly way of giving is the needy giving up to the wealthy. The money flows from the lesser to the greater. Not so in the kingdom of heaven.

Ministries announce giving via pledges, watching one another put in out “offerings.”

Getting tax receipts to tell the government, so they can record our every move, controlling who gets what, who they approve giving to.

Jesus’ secretive way of giving has with it Jesus’ reward. And the worldly way of announcing our giving has a worldly reward.

Our Center and High King

“Let the assembled peoples gather around you, while you sit enthroned over them on high.” – Psalms 7:7

If we look close…we can glean some profound things from this short verse.

  • In the kingdom of God we assemble AROUND our Lord Jesus. He alone is the CENTER.
  • In the kingdom of God he is OVER us all, as the supreme king sitting high on his throne.

Why We Love Sermons

I think we misinterpret why we love our pastors sermons so much.

It is not because he is a special Christian with a special calling over us. We may believe that, but I don’t believe deep within that is why we love to hear him.

I believe it is because he is doing what we all are called to be doing. He is obedient and courageous enough to share Jesus Christ during the Christian gatherings. He is letting his light shine. And during Christian meetings we are not doing those things, and are not even expected to be by our church culture.

But Jesus himself does want that from us, despite what we want, or our pastor wants, or our church tradition wants. Jesus who lives deep within us wants that. So I think part of us craves that we too would share Jesus with the boldness and the obedience that our pastor has.

All the lies we are told and tell ourselves about our need for endless sermons. And the setting up of hierarchies. And some great man being in charge of the meetings.

And who clergy is in relation to us and who we (laity) are not in relation to them, that came later. It was not started by the Lord Jesus. And we just are continue it by tradition.
