What Are Waves and Winds of Doctrine?

Hurricanes destroy with extreme winds, storm surge and relentless waves. Not many things can stand in their path without facing destruction.

The storm named Katrina in 2005 was an example of extreme destruction and death by hurricane. More than 1,800 people lost their lives in this hurricane as it smashed into New Orleans! A nightmarish direct hit. Billions of dollars in damage were inflicted upon this city.

I find the science of hurricanes fascinating, if you are interested in digging deeper into hurricanes then check out this site to learn the basics.

hurricane

Hurricanes are built in warm ocean waters, low air pressure mixes and swirls and intensifies gaining energy until it hits land. When it hits land the energy is dissipated and as a result, destruction occurs in it path.  Builders in hurricane zones follow different building codes than they do in other parts of the country.  Foundations need to be more secure, extra preparation is done when a hurricane approaches. The biggest weather event in my home town was a result of a hurricane and this is hundreds of miles inland, people still talk about hurricane Agnes flooding, almost 50 years later.

The difficult thing about studying hurricanes is their massive size, it’s a huge undertaking to do controlled experiments. NASA studies hurricanes with drones.

As interesting as the weather science of hurricanes is, I have another reason for writing this article.

Spiritual Hurricanes

There are other types of “hurricanes” that we should be concerned with.  Hurricanes blow winds in every direction depending on where we are in relation to the center of the storm. Storm surges inland drowning and destroying, then storm surge water flows back out to sea sweeping things out that are not tied down.

Scriptures uses winds and waves as a metaphor for teachings and doctrines. This can be applied to doctrines about how we got here and why we are here, worldviews and opinions about God. We pay schools and Universities thousands of dollars each year to teach us varied teachings, Often it seems with little regard about the truthfulness of what they teach.

It is as if the ideas of relativism have ok’d various winds of doctrine as truth, as if it ok to disregard other teachings as untrue.

There is a metaphor in the book of Ephesians about this exact thing:

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching (doctrine) and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. – Ephesians 4:14

I can think of at least four different worldview winds of doctrine that I and most students have been taught as fact by different teachers. These worldviews include Judeo-Christianity, atheistic naturalism, Muslim doctrines about God and general multi God religions of the East.  Furthermore within each of these set of teachings there are doctrines within, attempting to push and pull us in every direction.

There are two defenses against hurricanes, to flee the storm or to fortify your life against it, most people in their path do both.

To flee winds and waves of doctrines is to avoid all philosophies and contrary teachings, isolate yourself. This is becoming increasingly difficult with the world being so interconnected.

Our other option is to fortify ourselves. The purpose of the 5 ministry gifts mentioned in Ephesians 4:12-13 was that we not be tossed back and forth by the waves and winds of teachings.  Waves and winds of teaching come whether we like them or not and unless we become a hermit… they are coming at us. Through friends, family, professors, news media, employers and every form of social media post.

If we fortify ourselves, if we know what we believe and why we believe it. If we build a strong foundation and attach ourselves to it with strength. If we develop within ourselves a method to consistently interpret truth and the proper use of science. If we fortify ourselves well we can become immovable and strongly connected to our foundation.

Jesus Christ the Hurricane Defense

I believe that Jesus Christ alone is THE only and best defense against the winds and waves mentioned in scripture. He is the family car fleeing at the right time. He is the boards on our windows, he is our sand bags to push back the flood waters. He is our special bolts securing our roof directly to our foundation. He is our fortified concrete bunker several yards down.  He is our firm foundation, Only in Jesus Christ can we find that foundation, only in Jesus Christ can we decipher truth from error. Only though Jesus Christ can we understand the world in which we live. Only in Jesus Christ can we resist the winds of doctrine which are false, about life and right and wrong. Jesus Christ is the interpretive key to reality and conflicting teachings. Without him, anything goes, everything falls apart and little makes sense.

Jesus Christ is the hermeneutic to interpret all of scripture. Jesus Christ is the way to understand and interpret God. As well as all of life’s circumstances and situations.

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. – Luke 24:27

Jesus himself, after his resurrection, taught his followers how to interpret scripture using himself. Most of Christianity has lost this today but I believe we are re-gaining it.

What winds and waves of doctrines have been tossing you around recently?

Dull Iron Still Sharpens

Knife Sharpening

Knife sharpening steel rods are round and very dull, you can buy them on amazon, dull iron sharpens iron.

When the dull knife is ground into the round hard steel rod the knife becomes sharp.  The bible teaches…

Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another – (Proverbs 27:17)

Notice that neither the knife nor the rod is sharp already. The idea that one of the irons in this verse needs to already be sharp is not in scripture and it does not fit the analogy of the verse.

Ecclesia Perfectly Demonstrates This Sharpening Principle

In other words when two or more gather together where Jesus is the focus of the meeting, they sharpen one another.  A spiritually sharp person does not need be present to do the sharpening with their superior wisdom and mentoring. Two spiritually dull believers still will sharpen one another as long as Jesus Christ is their central pursuit.

When brothers (and sisters) come together in fellowship a sharpening occurs when they gather in the name of Jesus Christ.  When the focus of the gatherers is on anything else, including nice church focused things. Sharpening will not necessarily happen or will be minimal, even things like bible study or prayer or service to others. Gathering in the name of Jesus Christ is a big deal, supernatural things happen.

When believers come together in pursuit of Jesus Christ, where he is the focus. And where seeking him together is the motive. God is there in the midst of them, a supernatural thing occurs that can’t be duplicated by the wisest of men, by the most skilled of counselors or by the brightest of mentors.

This supernatural sharpening is spontaneous and is a natural fruit from the body of Christ, the gatherings of God’s people. When we do this we don’t need anyone to teach us, we have friction which chisels off bits of ourselves. The bits that need to go, the bits that keep us dull spiritually.

Yes even dull iron sharpens iron.

Have you ever experienced a meeting like this?

I have decided to dedicate 2015 to intensely seeking Jesus Christ, with all my spare time. Some of this will be documented in this blog, most will not.  I would love to do this with other people, the more the better, lets seek him together!  We could meet up once in a while and also share online.  Please email me at collierak@me.com if you want to intensely seek to know Jesus better in 2015 (or any time for that matter).

What He Was Looking For – Part 2

When God Hovered

Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters  And God said…

When God hovered over the waters in Genesis 1:2, what was He looking for? He seems to have been looking for something, many theologians believe he was looking for something. And there seems to be a repeating pattern found from Genesis to Revelation seem to agree. He was looking for a place to dwell, a home, and a universe to expand himself into. He was looking in the universe what he

The expansion of his family was the goal of God before he said “…let there be light”, and God is timeless so we can conclude that this is the goal of God even now.  Said in a different way… ‘God’s motive for creating everything and everyone that we see is to extend the mutual fellowship that the Father, the Son and the Spirit enjoyed.’

Based on scripture this is the goal of God, this is the “meaning of life”, if we can accept it.

And as a follow on and evolution of that movement of God, the church, which is made up of living stones. Is now that dwelling place that God is after (1 Peter 2:5). Not religious buildings, not temples, not synagogues, not mosques but living people. Sharing their lives together in the presence of God, Jesus said wherever two or more gather in my name, there am I in the midst, he dwells when his people gather together in the name of Christ. This doesn’t mean those who simply say “in the name of Christ” after prayers, this means Christ is supreme in our motives, a sharing of life together, a bringing to one another what Christ gives us (1 Cor 14:26). Just like a family does.

This was the reason God sent Jesus Christ to redeem mankind from the hell we chose. This is God’s vision for His people, and we see in Acts that salvations result naturally when Christ is supreme in a body of people, when mutual fellowship occurs and when our motives are in alignment with God, his ‘living temples’ grow all over the earth naturally.

Family-Life

A family shares their lives together, a family sticks close to one another, a family faces trials and blessings together. There is no substitute for family-life.

Ever-expansion of family is God’s goal. I’m not necessarily saying the ever- expansion of genetic families, not necessarily expansion through biological reproduction, But, the ever-expansion of God’s presence on earth and I believe eventually throughout the universe.

thechurch

Healthy families share their lives together, everyone contributes, everyone has a role, everyone has their place, it is not simply a following of dad, its a mutual respect and love, expanding growing and multiplying.

Jesus said in Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”

God dwells in our mutual fellowship when we gather in his name, not when we gather in the name of a church. Not when we gather it the name of a great denomination, not when we gather in the name of a great preacher or a great leader, but when we gather together in his name.  Meaning Jesus Christ at the center-supreme in everyone’s mind and motive. Not when we gather for noble efforts like giving to the poor, not even when we gather together to teach and learn bible wisdom or to win souls but when we gather in the name of Jesus Christ and make him our object, our reason and our purpose.  All those other things are distracting (although sometimes good) side-issues that will happen naturally.

Gods purpose, his reason for creating fascinates me, I think we should align ourselves with His intention and purpose, in every area of our lives.
