The Fragrance of Jesus Christ

A Jesus-Dream

My dream is that knowledge of Jesus Christ would spread as a continuous fragrant offering up to God. Spontaneous, world-wide, uncontrolled and unstoppable. May his assemblies spread, and may his representatives spread this sweet fragrance of Christ all over the planet. Not through sermons and mass by professionals but by every person in every town in whom Jesus dwells.

When Aaron trims the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense. There shall be perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations. – Exodus 30:8

I think the prophet Malachi, the apostle Paul, and many others, also had this dream. Notice in the verse below that Malachi said “among the nations” and “in every place“. His prophecy involved everywhere, not only in Israel. Notice that Paul said “through us“, he was not speaking of his team of leaders but to the entire assembly in Corinth, every member.

“For from the rising of the sun even to its setting, My name will be great among the nations. In every place incense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name will be great among the nations,” says the LORD of hosts.” – ‭‭Malachi‬ ‭1:11‬ ‭

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things?” – ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭2:14-16

Jesus-people declaring Jesus himself. I look forward seeing to the fragrance of Christ emanating throughout all generations.

The Real Followers of Christ

Followers Not Groupies

Most of the followers of Jesus mentioned in scripture followed not because of promises of victory. Not because of promises of overcoming circumstances, and not because of promises of health and wealth. There was something else that created real followers of Jesus Christ.

Those crowds of groupies had left him long before they had to make a commitment to follow. Those groupies are not useful to build his body on earth. Once they experienced or heard something hard they stopped following him, they took their blessing and went home. Jesus needs disciples, not groupies, to build his house on earth, he needs those who will respond to the command “follow me”. He needs those empty vessels cleaned out by death and repentance through the ministry of John the Baptist.

The disciples of Christ followed after Jesus because they got a glimpse of him, not of his goodie bag. These real followers of Jesus were not scared away by trouble. The trouble that Jesus sometimes pulled out of his bag was not a major issue in comparison to the magnitude of him.

They saw Jesus Christ in a spiritual way, they saw God in him. They beheld the extreme brightness of his glory, the glory of God himself. They later got to see him again, alive in themselves and in other people after he became a life-giving spirit. They realized he is the new creation they were hoping for, they knew he himself is the resurrection they look forward to. That alone secured their devotion and commitment and love forever. In good and bad, in sickness and health, in persecution and comfort whether confused by him or understanding everything.

IF we can see him

Today it seems most ministries assume the crowds are self-centered and just wanting ease and blessings. Relying on that is the foundation of what it is they build. They offer a lifetime of self-help tips in the form of ‘sermons’. But I think this generation is really no different from past generations. We like every just need to see him as he really is, the future. It is in our DNA to respond to him IF (and that is a massive life-changing IF) we see him as he really is. The death of sinful humanity in Adam and the new creation spreading over the earth and the cosmos.

If we can get a glimpse of the magnitude of the immensity of Jesus Christ and the future that he has. The eternal; and infinitely growing universe that is his kingdom. If we can get that glimpse of him and if others could just get that beautiful view of him within us. Then the generations would not abandon him anymore, they would flock. They would run to him in tears, regardless of the trouble following him brought to them. They would not be self-centered by default anymore, seeing no alternative. They would become real followers of Jesus Christ after seeing his glory.

Christ is All Things

Christ is All

I am in a 757 airplane flying over the Rocky Mountains Saturday reading the book One by Henry Hon. I am reminded by Hon that Christ is all things and all things in life point to him. This happens if we are willing to look at life in a spiritual way. In scripture we see the apostles pointing to Jesus Christ as the real spiritual subject of all happenings.

For example, Jesus is the real land of provision (Eph 3:17-18), the real manna the bread of life giving me energy everyday (John 6:48). He is the real Passover lamb giving me nourishment for the journey (John 1:29). He is the real gold and copper and silver in the land. He is the real milk, the real honey, he is the real water of life (John 4:11) flowing in the land. He is also the real breath of life that we so easily take for granted.

Jesus is My 757 Jetliner

Ephesians 4:10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.

But for me today Jesus Christ is the real 757 jetliner. He is taking me home to the family I love. He is my enclosure which keeps me warm and quickly moving in the right direction. If I were to get out of this plane I’d be going in the wrong direction. I’d be headed for a place that I don’t belong. He has air for me to breathe up here, he has food and drinks for me up here. He has chairs to sit in comfort (sort of) and he has real entertainment found in new friends within him.

Jesus Christ moves me faster, taking me where I belong. He moves me far above my obstacles and the immovable mountains that I cannot remove on my own. Far above the snow storms and the freezing winds, far above the wasteland desert of Nevada I see below. And Jesus escorts me far faster and far higher than I could ever hope to move without him.
