A Community of Innovators

Social enterprise network platforms are a hobby of mine.  I really enjoy learning all of the corporate options to “go social”

Companies can build their own site with MS sharepoint or they can purchase turn-key software being offered commercially.

What I find fascinating about this is not the change management that required to get employees to actually embrace these powerful tools.  Nor is it the great options being developed and sold by different companies. What amazes and excites me about social enterprise networking tools is the great potential they offer a company or any organization to get more healthy organizationally.

Toxic organization cultures drive me nuts !  I think that I am more sensitive to toxicity than the average employee nevertheless I am a unsympathetic with leadership creating toxic environments by ignoring culture or creating unhealthy environments with their behavior.

The behaviors necessary for an organization to become more social are the same behavior changes that an organization needs to become more healthy. Behaviors such as openness, collaboration, helpfulness, selflessness, doing what is right for the organization above personal career ambitions.

In general, the same people who will scoff at ever using a social platform are the same people who make organizations toxic and are the same people who behave selfishly in their careers, who keep secrets, who won’t collaborate with anyone outside of their tight circles.

For me engagement in social enterprise software is becoming a litmus test. I realize that this may be a bit too soon since we are only in early stages of social enterprise acceptance.

I am convinced that organizational health can be helped, can be driven from within partially using social enterprise software.  This is why I feel that organizations should “go social”, a healthy organization is far better to work in than is an unhealthy one.

What Is the Fragrance of the Knowledge of Him?

Smoke and Fragrances Diffusing Through the Air

Have you ever noticed how certain odors trigger memories? Believe it or not, for me second-hand cigarette smoke is a sweet fragrance. Not because I smoke, and not because I want to smoke (I do not). But because the smell of second hand cigarette smoke reminds me of my grandfather. When I pass by a smoker I almost always think of him. I don’t mind indoor smokers because of this. It is a very pleasant experience because of the fond memories of my grandfather in my childhood.

Smoke, like all fragrances spreads through the air and permeates almost everything. Smoke often has with it an odor that spreads and is sensed by most everyone around. Similarly, certain forms of knowledge are like fragrances. Not all knowledge spreads easily. And other knowledge spreads difficultly and some slowly. Some knowledge spreads wildly and freely; other knowledge we must pay for and obtain with great difficutlty.

Knowledge spreads best when it is very good or very bad and when fully embraced. It also spreads best when its falls into the hands of gifted teachers.

Knowledge spreads like fragrance but it needs a different medium than air. It spreads through people. Furthermore, the apostle Paul compared fragrance to the knowledge of Jesus Christ spreading throughout humanity.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.” Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 2:14

What Does Burning Incense Mean in the Bible?

Paul in writing to the Corinthian group of Christians, is not the first writer of scripture to compare fragrant smoke to something spiritual. In the instructions for the tabernacle of Moses there was detailed instruction for the smoke of incense. Incense is a fragrant fine-smelling smoke. And incense was used in the tabernacle of Moses (Ex 25:37) and in the book of Revelation, the spiritual meaning of this incense is explained (Rev 5:8, 8:3-4). The incense was to represent the prayers of the saints rising up to thone of God.

So the smoke of the incense is the prayers of God’s people, rising up to God with faith. And thereby the will of God is done on earth as it is in heaven. And similarlly the smoke of the fragrance of the knowledge of Jesus Christ fills the earth. It fills humanity, it fills the spiritual places in heavenly places. It will continue to increase forever and will fill the entire universe. Never forget, it is written that of the increase of his kingdom there will be no end.

More fascinating details about the fragrance of the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Competency is Critical

Good Leader Bad Manager

Have you ever wondered what makes a great manager? It is more than leadership skill, I know of several good leaders who make ineffective managers. There are also effective managers who don’t seem to be strong leaders. What can explain this discrepancy? How could a strong leader not manage well? I think that competency makes all the difference in high-tech R&D leadership.

In the field of high-tech R&D an effective manager needs to be competent in their field. The level of competence needed for effective management is often underestimated. Many think strong leaders will lead well wherever they are. If they are trained in management then they will lead well even if they are not competent in their field. Project leadership teacher say one does not necessarily need to understand the science in depth to lead a technical project. I believe this is often not the case.

“Competence is possessing skill and knowledge that allows us to do something successfully. It also describes the ability to apply prior experience to new situations with good effect. Our competency usually increases over time as we acquire more information and ability through inquiry, observation, and participation…” –  www.wisdomcommons.org

High Tech Competence

Most R&D projects require high-tech competence beyond the average person. Compared to running a retail business or marketing products or managing a construction project, high-tech competence is difficult to find. Therefore managers of these projects must be willing and able to learn from his/her scientists. Even be able and willing to work as a scientist in order to gain the necessary competency to manage.

Often the employees who are highly competent in science don’t make great managers because they are not interested in management. They became scientists because that’s what they wanted to do, they love science and love inventing. Few want to move into the stressful field of management? As a result many scientists are not accustomed to making difficult decisions under pressure.

But for those brave enough to venture into management I think there are at least three things we can do to prepare ourselves to manage R&D projects.

  1. Pursue competence through study and research, don’t take the shallow expert in everything approach, go deep into whatever you are working on.
  2. Always be in the habit of learning from your own experiments or other scientist’s work?
  3. Become decisive, develop the habit of making decisions and correcting bad decisions, break through the fear of making bad decisions.

Have you ever noticed a strong leader who is a lousy manager? and was competence part of the problem?
