a healthy depression

Depression and Jesus Christ

What Exactly Is Depression:

There is a healthy depression but according to Wikipedia Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior, tendencies, feelings, and sense of well-being.[1] A depressed mood is a normal temporary reaction to life events such as loss of a loved one. It is also a symptom of some physical diseases and a side effect of some drugs and medical treatments. Depressed mood is also a symptom of some mood disorders such as major depressive disorder or dysthymia.[2]Depression can be a powerfully negative thing in a person’s life. Depression can be debilitating, it can be caused by a medical condition . It can and has even resulted in death, I do not mean to minimize depression in any way with this post.

In fact I am hesitant to even use the word depression for what I am trying to get at with this post. This post is exclusively intendind for Christians. For those in whom Jesus Christ lives, there is something like a mild form of healthy depression that can be experienced.

A Healthy Depression

Depression or the feeling of chronic sadness or loss of hope is not necessarily always a bad thing. There are at least two causes for what I call Healthy Depression.

There is a time in a Christian’s life as he/she walks with the Lord that we are forced to chose which way we will go.

“But A NATURAL MAN/ WOMAN does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But HE/SHE WHO IS SPIRITUAL appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:14-15‬ ‭NASB‬

Christians constantly must chose whether or not we will follow Jesus Christ in many ways. Sometimes following him is a very difficult and painful thing (think of the rich young ruler who was told to sell all he had, then walked away sad).

Depending on our age or our understanding of Jesus we may chose poorly. We may side with our natural man/woman rather than our spiritual man/ woman. For some it can take years for God to gain ground in us enough to follow Jesus fully.

Our insight and understanding of the magnitude of Jesus Christ, who he is, who he has made us to be and what is coming has a lot to do with how devoted, how fixated, and how completely we are inclined to follow Jesus.

But when Jesus is alive in us and when we side with our natural fallen, sinful, distracted state. That choice can result in feelings similar to depression.

When we side with our natural self we live below the life of Jesus Christ. His life which is freely available to us, which knocks on the door of our heart.

When we do this we can grieve the Spirit of God within us and we then can feel that grief. We actually can feel HIS grief or sorrow.

It is this godly sorrow which turns us around to Jesus Christ. I am not talking about guilt. Guilt is ungodly and destructive.

When I’ve grieved the spirit or seen others do so there is a strong desire to make it right. To do what it takes to stop, turn around and please him. There is a restorative aspect that is undeniable, not so with guilt.

This depressed state as we neglect the Lord within is not something we should medicate. Instead it is something we desperately need to understand better. Failing to live by Jesus Christ can depress us, it can affect our emotions, it can make us, as we face our fallen state, sad.

Dying Daily Hurts

This feeling of depression is also not always associated with poor choices and sin. It can also be a reaction to the dying daily state of the Christian. Our lives are hidden in God in Jesus Christ, our natural man with his plans, and fleshly ambitions needs to go unsatisfied.

“He must increase and I must decrease” sometimes hurts. “Less of me” can result in feelings of loss.

I had many ambitions, dreams and hopes that I’ve had to let go of. I can’t tell you how much that hurt and sometimes still hurts, it has felt like a great loss which is difficult to describe.

This feeling of loss is what I call a healthy depression, it has a purpose. It is not a feeling of sorrow over abandonment or aloneness. Perhaps depression is even too strong of a word here but I think it may fit. Its a godly sorrow with a purpose and an affect. Another way of saying this its a reaction of our natural man to dying or not getting his way.

Sometimes I think we are too quick to assume feelings of sadness are unhealthy depression that need to be medicated with medicine, or food, or addictions. Or trying harder in our religious duties. When all we really need is a greater understanding of the work of Jesus Christ on our natural man in order that we might follow him more completely.

Two Reasons For Healthy Depression

Sometimes we are not medically depressed we are just feeling the same grief of the Holy Spirit who lives within us.

Allow yourself to be convicted and turn around and follow him again.

Other times our natural man is simply reacting to his loss of control and/or loss of getting his way, yielding to Jesus Christ.

I could find examples of both of these in scripture but I think you get my point.

In either case knowing the Lord more fully is the answer to this.

Allow yourself to feel this healthy “depression”, let it shape and guide you, to go FULLY with the Lord. Regardless of how much it hurts, he is worth it. He HIMSELF is our consolation, a prize far better than any prize that we could dream of.

Gods Enduring Resolve

God’s Secret

God’s Secret (its a big one)

Did you know that God had secrets that he intentionally hid from mankind? Gods secret, also referred to the mystery in the New Testament is Gods story of patient endurance and progressive revelation. Generations past were kept in the dark about certain specifics concerning Gods purpose for creating and his future plans.

“which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things;”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:5, 9‬ ‭NASB‬‬

God was very strategic to all the generations of men to let them in on only so much of what he was doing.

God’s plan unfolded very slowly.

Think of all the generations before Christ even came. Think of all the prep work, all the gradual revelation. A prophet here and there. A type, a shadow. So prolonged and strategic and seemingly drawn out. Think of all the horrific reality so many billions of people have experienced, the other gods they worshiped and served who were really angelic beings. Think of the suffering, the pain, the horrific reality of so many for so long. The wars, the murder, the sacrifices, the rule and reign of death and fear of death over humanity.

But then one day came the lowly Jesus Christ, like a lamb to the slaughter. The real sufferer, the real sacrifice, the real murder victim, the real man of sorrows and grief.

The End of Death

He ended death… with death. He turned the tables on the murderous god of this world who himself didn’t fully understand what was happening.

Satan was in the dark concerning the enormity of what was happening. Satan the killer and ruler of men was killing his best and biggest and most effective weapon that he had over his enslaved human race, death.

Think of all the types and shadows and talk and meaning leading up to the real thing, Jesus Christ himself.

“We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”” Phillip in John‬ ‭1:45‬ ‭

The endurance of God really blows me away, his plan and utter commitment to that plan is almost to great to fully comprehend. Regardless of what humans go through and endure God is almost infinitely committed to his plan which is even now barely discussed and understood.

The fact that he would orchestrate such a long and drawn out plan through out history should tell us the enormity and infinite importance of it.

To be more specific, God is emphasizing Jesus Christ to every generation from Adam to today (2018). He emphasizes him by the immense length he went to to keep his mystery hidden until Jesus Christ, he saved it for him. It is emphasized it in Jesus as he gradually reveals it through the body of Christ, the church in the earth. Which is bringing about the will and reign of God on earth …”as it is in heaven.”

Hidden Even Still

This purpose of God is hidden still to those of us who neglect Jesus Christ. Reject Jesus Christ and even our existence remains a mystery. Let alone the complex problems in reality.

But to those of us who know to center ourselves and fixate ourselves on Jesus alone, as does God, there is for us heaven on earth. There is clarity of who we are, why we are here and exactly what is coming.

God seems to be infinitely resolved in what he is doing. That resolve is summed up and concentrated in the person of Jesus Christ.

Another way of saying it…

Gods secret plan and the purpose for the creation is now revealed. Gods secret is concentrated and poured into the person of Jesus Christ. And God is intensely devoted and committed and resolved to that purpose.

Jesus Christ is Gods enduring resolve, God’s eternal purpose, God’s center of attention.

Seeing this, knowing this we ought to stand up, take sober notice of him daily and live likewise.

What are you resolved about?

Insurgence

An Insurgence to End All Insurgencies

An Insurgence to End All Insurgencies

Frank Viola’s books and ministry have opened up a new glimpse of Jesus Christ to me in the past 3 years. His new book Insurgence continues that process so I wanted to share it with my readers.

This book (and post) is about the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ. The revolutionary news that Jesus is this world’s true king. This good news has powerful implications. Implications which can infuriate many, it uproots and overturns societies like nothing else. It truly is an insurgence to end all insurgencies.

The gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ is so beyond, so radical, so much larger than what is being preached in most ministries today. It is almost an entirely different message.

If you don’t normally read books this book is not like others. Frank broke the book into a blog post style which makes it very easy to read, set down to process, and think about, then pick up again when you are ready.

Some interview questions that Frank answered for me about this book.

1) Why did you write the book Insurgence?

I write the book I myself want to read but cannot find. INSURGENCE is a book that does the following:

* presents the gospel of the kingdom comprehensively from Genesis to Revelation. (Not just “the kingdom” but “the gospel of the kingdom”).

* declare the message without any agenda for the progressive left or the conservative right (the gospel of the kingdom cannot fit into either).

* present the material in a highly accessible and easy-to-read manner so that a high school can understand as well as scholars and theologians (due to the depth).

* give practical exercise to navigate readers to implement the message into their own lives and churches.

* give an update on the present Insurgence that’s sweeping the world.

Because I couldn’t find one book that did all of those things, I wrote INSURGENCE: Reclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom (landing page at http://Insurgence.org with samples and reviews by scholars, theologians, pastors, etc.).

2) What is the primary difference between the gospel of the kingdom of Jesus Christ and the gospel of salvation?

I address this in the book itself, but they are the same gospel. The gospel of the kingdom stresses the kingship of Jesus and its massive implications while the gospel of salvation emphasis the Lord’s deliverance from the world system, the flesh, the grip of the devil, and God’s judgment. They are two sides of the same incredible gospel message.

3) What is the key take away that you hope readers get from the Insurgence book after reading it?

There are many. Here are two examples from two seasoned leaders:

“I have written about fifty books, read hundreds—maybe thousands IN MY 83 years. “INSURGENCE” IS THE ONE BOOK YOU MUST READ! It is everything I believe, said much better than I am graced to say it. You ask me what I believe. I will respond: “What he said!” To all of my beloved friends and fellows who are diligently laboring for reformation, restoration and revival: “Your efforts will be unfruitful apart from the kingdom foundation clearly laid out in Frank Viola’s new book.” During the entire time of reading this book my spirit has been vibrating like a tuning fork that has just been struck!”

And another:

I am finding this book to be singularly unique among the thousands I own. I am ¾ the way done and the timing of this book for me personally has the Lord’s fingerprints all over it. In many ways, it has encouraged. But it has also devastated me. Quite honestly, I’m undone in many ways.

Like Sam, the Lord has used the book to highlight and clarify issues of worldliness in my own life. Some of those issues were obvious to me and I have desired liberation. Some were more subterranean and the Light has invaded. For three weeks now, I have been seriously mulling the idea that I should get baptized again because of the light dispensed by this book. And I plan on it. I want to. I was not aware as a new believer of the totality of what being in Christ meant. One cannot say that after reading Insurgence.

I am encouraged that such “a word” was permitted to issue to the Body of Christ because it can only mean that the Lord is ready to do something. Something I have been longing for both personally and for the Body. I don’t feel that it will be a sweeping worldwide phenomena global (the best and truest moves of God never are) but I do think it can affect pockets of believers globally. That will be enough to please His heart.

This book threads a very precarious needle where others have tried and missed the mark. It is almost impossible to write a book like this without some measure of legalism creeping in. Yet, the tightrope wire is successfully crossed in Insurgence. This is a book that will smoke out the libertine and legalist hiding in plain sight in each of our hearts.

My prayer for myself is: “Lord please don’t let this word go wasted in my life. Have mercy, I am desperate! It is an appointed hour in my life. Please don’t let this be another good book that moved me merely while I was reading it and for a week two beyond that. DO SOMETHING in my heart! Something permanent. Something irrevocable. Something eternal. Something that brings pleasure to your heart. Something that meets your need in this hour. Something that moves the boundary markers of your Kingdom forward! Something that is fully in synch with your Eternal Purpose!”

I pray it may be so for all of us.

I am receiving emails like this daily from readers. Profoundly honoring and hugely humbling.
