Giving, Taxes, and Salary Contentment

Part of the way John the Baptist prepared people for Jesus Christ was repentance from financial sin. The rich was to now give directly to the poor.

This is very foreign to our sinful nature, especially our religious nature. Religious people are trained to think completely contrary to this (most Americans). And so we overlook this aspect of Johns ministry.

We think John the Baptist just preached about gross blatant sin. But money sin was a big part of his preparation of the people.

We are taught that tithes are the virtuous way to manage our money, but it is not.

Some of these Pharisees were probably professional tithers yet snubbed the poor, probably took from them in various ways, perhaps “employed” them with lousy wages, then they decided that their poorness was their own fault, they were cursed. Or at least they were not good enough to be blessed by God…like them.

“And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do? And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise. “Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:10-14‬ ‭ESV‬‬

John has much to say about money and the kingdom that he was ushering into the earth. This new kingdom has an entirely new and righteous way to think of manage money. In summary that new kingdom way is sharing (the opposite of hoarding), it is working so we have something to give rather than stealing, and contentment with our pay.

Free Resources During Coronavirus Isolation

Updated on 3/20/2020: I’ve been offered some free resources during this coronavirus isolation month. And I thought I would compile and share (in one place) a list of free and discounted resources (and even food) during this time of isolation.

Free Educational Resources For Parents

Free to everyone, free audio books for kids, tweens, and teens ! Just click here> (stories.audible.com)

Free Wifi During Coronavirus

Comcast is offering wifi hotspots available nationwide due to the coronavirus.

The hotspots will be available with no data caps, disconnects or late fees and speeds will increase to 3 Mbps. This allows parents and students to have access to news and educational content.

Once at a hotspot, select “xfinitywifi” network name from the wifi menu, then launch the preferred browser.

XFinity

To find an Xfinity WiFi Hotspot, check the hotspot location map at wifi.xfinity.com or download the Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app from the App Store or Google Play.

Xfinity is making it easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign up by offering new customers 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service.

According to Xfinity’s website, that service is normally $9.95 a month.

The company is also increasing internet speeds for the Internet Essentials service from 15/2 Mbps to 25/3 Mbps for all new and existing customers, which will be the speed of the service going forward.

To receive the increased Internet speeds, existing customers will not need to do anything.

For new customers, applicants visit www.internetessentials.com. The accessible website also includes the option to video chat with customer service agents in American Sign Language. There are also two dedicated phone numbers 1-855-846-8376 for English and 1-855-765-6995 for Spanish.

Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will also be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet customers. For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, visit xfinity.com/wifi. Once at a hotspot, consumers should select the “xfinitywifi” network name in the list of available hotspots, and then launch a browser.

“Elderly With Underlying Conditions“

Maybe all the security and peace we felt because of our prosperity and our guns is false and unfounded.

Maybe they make us overconfident, arrogant, and oblivious to our real situation.

Maybe this pandemic is shining light on the real state of things that we like hide from, behind money and power.

Maybe we are not really all that safe, maybe our days really are numbered. Maybe we are much more hand to mouth and dependent on God than we realize.

Maybe the term “elderly with underlying lung conditions.” Is a metaphor for us all.

An accurate perspective on ourselves can give us an accurate perspective of Jesus Christ.

He is to be the center and supreme king of our lives. Not a Sunday hobby, and not a genie in a bottle for a better life.
